HOW TO PREPARE FOR TISS-NET?

TISS National Entrance Test (TISS-NET) is a national level entrance exam administered by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for admission to its postgraduate courses. It’s a computer-based entrance exam. It contains 100 multiple-choice questions that assess your general awareness, verbal proficiency, quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning. This blog is your guide to studying for the exam.
STRUCTURE AND SYLLABUS OF THE EXAM

- The duration of the exam is 100 minutes (1 hour 40 mins).
- There is no Negative Marking.
- All questions carry one mark each.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
The objective of this section is to assess one’s English language comprehension and vocabulary.
Questions in this section present themselves in the form of: 
- Word Choice
- Sentence Correction
- Odd-One-Out
- Analogies
- Synonyms & Antonym
- Verbal reasoning
- Reading comprehension etc.
Recommended books include:
- ‘Word Power Made Easy’ – by Norman Lewis
- ‘High School English Grammar & Composition’ – by Wren & Martin
MATHEMATICAL AND LOGICAL REASONING
The objective of this section is to assess one’s quantitative skills and logical reasoning.
This section includes BASIC questions related to:
- Arithmetics
- Geometry
- Trigonometry
- Statistics
- Number Series
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning etc.
The recommended books include: ‘Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Exams’ by R.S. Aggarwal.
GENERAL AWARENESS
The objective of this section is to assess awareness about Current Affairs, developmental and socio-political issues.
The questions in this section are spread across a wide array of fields including:
- Politics
- Social Studies
- Science & Technology
- Environment
- Sports
- Art & Culture
- Indian History
Recommended books include:
- Manorama Year Book 2021
- Lucent GK Book for Static
General Knowledge - Reading newspapers like The Hindu, The Indian Express, Economic Times, Financial Express, on a regular basis.

It’s important that you stay calm and focused on your preparation for the exam. Make a schedule and decide on a strategy that compliments your learning style. Revise your strategy and schedule regularly according to the time left. Strengthen your basic concepts and practice your way to success.
