Health psychology is the study of psychological and behavioral processes in health, illness, and healthcare. It is concerned with understanding how psychological, behavioral, and cultural factors contribute to physical health and illness. Psychological factors can affect health directly.
Applications of Health Psychology
- Developing and evaluating interventions to enhance patient self-management/ health-related behavior change (e.g. smoking cessation, weight management)
- Developing and validating assessment tools to evaluate the effects of health interventions (including pharmacological, cognitive, behavioral and motivational interventions)
- Developing NHS services for patients with comorbid physical and mental health conditions
- Contributing to the development of evidence-based guidelines for the management of long-term conditions
- Working with organizations to improve the health and wellbeing of their members/ employees
- Working at an individual level with patients requiring support for living with and managing long-term conditions
- Working at an individual level with patients requiring support for health-related behavior change
- Working with other health care professionals (e.g. occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, GPs) to support patients' physical and psychological health care needs

- Bachelor’s degree: 3 years
- Master’s degree: 2 years
- Doctorate degree: 2 years
