CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY 

Clinical psychology is an integration of science, theory, and clinical knowledge for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically-based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective well-being and personal development.     

 


 

APPLICATION 

Clinical psychology, branch of psychology concerned with the practical application of research methodologies and findings in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Clinical psychologists classify their basic activities under three main headings: assessment (including diagnosis), treatment, and research.

  • In assessment, clinical psychologists administer and interpret psychological tests, either for the purpose of evaluating individuals’ relative intelligence or other capabilities or for the purpose of eliciting mental characteristics that will aid in a particular mental disorder.
  • In treatment, the clinical psychologist may use any of several types of psychotherapy. Many clinical psychologists take an eclectic approach, drawing on a combination of techniques suited to the client.
  • Research is an important field for some clinical psychologists because of their training in experimental research and statistical procedures.

The duration of the course is 2 years for the post-graduation/ masters in clinical psychology.

The eligibility for this course is that a person should have done B.A in psychology/ Clinical psychology.

Duration of course and degree

 

Bachelor's degree programs in this field train students to understand the general psychological principles underlying the cognitive, social and personal development of children and youths. Depending on the institution, developmental psychology programs may only admit undergraduate students who have a minimum GPA and have completed basic coursework in the natural and life sciences, English and sociology. Duration is 3 years.

In masters or post-graduation, Most programs require students to complete applied research practicums and a master's thesis or special research project. In preparation for completing these projects, coursework in an M.A. program usually focuses on further developing students' knowledge of methodological, statistical and theoretical approaches to psychology.
